Against all odds the Peace Corps is sending me to Nicaragua - The Land of Lakes + Volcanoes. This blog will take you alongside my adventure, my service, my life. Enjoy!

You’ve got to be kidding me!

I finally started thinking about packing for Nicaragua today. Yes, 25 days early… a miracle I know! Sara, a girl who is going to Nicaragua with me, graciously sent me her current packing list as I thought that would be a good place to start. It’s basically a conglomeration of what the Peace Corps tells us we should bring and what she thinks we’ll really need. Honestly, I opened the document and about freaked out when I saw that it was 5 pgs long. Probably didn’t help that I opened it after reading that we get only 80lbs of luggage according to PC regulations! No way! How the heck and I going to fit everything?!?!

What really hit me, though, was my  next thought, “how much is this going to cost me?!?!”  I was looking at the seemingly endless list, marking what I already have and what I need to buy, and I found myself unconsciously imagining the final bill. Then I added that to how much money/time I’ve already spent on everything PC – shots, doctors appt., asthma consultations, etc. and freaked out a little more. This whole PC thing isn’t cheap! Just think about it… I’m buying clothes/supplies for what could be the next 2 yrs.

If I didn’t really want to do the PC, I would definitely have run away a long time ago. But, I know that the PC is what I want to do + what I’ve wanted to do for a long time; a dream which is finally coming true! I can’t even fathom what the next 2 yrs will bring. If in the end I touch just one life for the better, I’ll be happy… but I’m hoping for more :)

Money is just money. It’ll come + it’ll go. Why not spend it on what I love to do?!?!
