Against all odds the Peace Corps is sending me to Nicaragua - The Land of Lakes + Volcanoes. This blog will take you alongside my adventure, my service, my life. Enjoy!

Slight Change of Plans

24. Jul, 2010

I found a Facebook group for Peace Corps volunteers leaving in August 2010 for Nicaragua!

So far there are 8 other members + they’re all very nice. I hope to get to know them better before heading to Washington DC for staging. It’ll be nice to have a “familiar face” upon arriving!

Anyways, I asked if anyone else had only 1 month of training like me (written on my invitation/assignment packet) because I thought it was weird that all my other PCMI friends have about 3 months of training + I have only 1 month. I thought that maybe it had to do with the fact that I already speak Spanish and therefore less training time because some of the language courses were cut… which of course made me nervous because I didn’t know what they were expecting of my Spanish skills! This is not the case however!

One of the girls wrote back that she too was told 1 month of training and called the Peace Corps office to ask about it. And guess what they told her?!?! Sorry it was an error… you really have 11 wks of training. So, I called too + sure enough, mine was a mistake too! The dates are off by about 2 months! So now instead of coming back Oct. 1st 2012, it’ll be November 16th, 2012. It’s only 1.5 months, but still… it’s important information!

I can’t believe they didn’t tell us! You know maybe a letter in the mail? Or an email? What if I would have made plans upon my return home?! Good thing I didn’t!

So it looks like I’ll be spending an additional 1.5 months in Nicaragua for a grand total of 26.5 months!

Hi Mon! Great looking blog. That is a little crazy about the PC being off by almost 2 months. At least you found out now and not at the end of your service. Can’t wait to hear more about the preparation and the adventure!
